Abstract

In this talk, I will discuss two approaches to do multi-platform research in
communication: comparative and connective, featuring two of my recent studies. The first
study examined the discourse around the #StopTheSteal conspiracies on three platforms-
Facebook, Twitter, and Parler. Utilizing a mix of machine learning, dictionary methods, and
qualitative analysis, we uncover how the usage of strategic frames and cues of violence differ
among platforms. In the second study, I adopt a connective approach to investigate the
emergence of the ChatGPT media hype in China. Based on the results from time-series analysis,
text classification, and named-entity recognition, this study reveals the volume and content
within the ChatGPT hype in China. I will also discuss several ongoing projects to illustrate multi-
platform research in other contexts, including political campaigns, news media platformization,
and cross-national digital activism and social movements.
